Dismounting Databases

Before commencing the Exchange Server Restore operation, dismount the database and change mailbox database properties on MS Exchange Server. 

To dismount,

For MS Exchange Server 2013

  1. Open Exchange Control Panel and select the databases in Exchange Admin Center.
  2. Select the Mailbox database from servers that needs to be restored and choose Dismount database from the More option.



  3. Double-click the Mailbox database and choose the maintenance tab from Properties window.
  4. Select the This database can be overwritten by a restore option and click save.



  5. Perform steps 3 and 4 listed above for all databases that need to be restored.

Note:Once the above mentioned steps are executed, close the Exchange Control Panel before initiating the restore operation. 

For MS Exchange Server 2007 and 2010
  1. Start the Start MS Exchange Management Console from  Start > Programs > Microsoft Exchange Server 2007/2010.
  2. Exchange Management Console appears.
  3. Right-click the Public Folder/ Mailbox database that you wish to restore > choose Dismount Database.
  4. Right-click the Public Folder/Mailbox database > choose Properties.
  5. Select the General tab for 2007 Exchange Server and Maintenance tab for 2010 Exchange Server from Properties and then enable the option This database can be overwritten by a restore
  6. Click Apply, followed by OK to confirm the operation.
  7. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 for all the databases that need to be restored.
  8. After performing the above steps, close the Exchange Management Console before initiating the restore operation.

For MS Exchange Server 2000 and 2003

  1. Start the MS Exchange System Manager from Start > Programs > Microsoft Exchange > System Manager.
  2. Exchange System Manager window appears.
  3. Here, right-click the Public Folder Store/Mailbox Store that you wish to restore > choose Dismount Store.
  4. Right-click the Public Folder Store/Mailbox Store > choose Properties.
  5. In the Properties dialog, select the Database tab and enable the option This database can be overwritten by a restore
  6. Click Apply followed by the OK button to confirm the operation.
  7. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 for all the individual databases that need to be restored.
  8. On performing the above steps, close the MS Exchange System Manager before initiating the restore operation.

Note: An off-line backup of MS Exchange Server databases before the restore operation is recommended as databases are overwritten.
